Modern automakers often equip their vehicles with advanced safety systems to help keep drivers, passengers, and others safe on the road. While some brands offer only basic safety systems, such as multiple air bags and rearview cameras, other brands, such as Hyundai, equip their vehicles with cutting-edge driver-assist technology. What is driver-assist technology? This technology uses cameras, sensors, radar, alerts, and warnings to help drivers stay safe on the road.

What Is Hyundai SmartSense?

Hyundai SmartSense  is the brand’s suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies and systems installed in vehicles to make traveling safer. The system uses automation and adaptation to help drivers stay in control and avoid collisions.

Hyundai SmartSense’s network of advanced safety and convenience technology includes the following features.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection

Hyundai’s forward collision-avoidance system with pedestrian detection will warn you when there’s about to be an imminent collision with a vehicle or pedestrian in front of you. The system uses automatic emergency braking to take action, spontaneously applying the vehicle’s brakes to avoid a collision.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist

When you’re driving down the freeway and need to switch lanes, you use your side and rearview mirrors to ensure there are no cars in the other lane you may collide with. However, some vehicles have a blind spot that can block your view. With blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, when you turn on your signal to switch lanes and the system detects an approaching vehicle, it’ll alert you and apply either the front left or right brake.

Blind-Spot View Monitor

As soon as you activate your turn signal to switch lanes, your Hyundai’s digital instrument cluster displays an automatic live feed of what’s in your blind spot from your side-view mirror cameras. You can then see when it’s safe to change lanes.

Lane-Following Assist

Sometimes, drivers get distracted while traveling down the freeway. If you unintentionally begin to drift from the center of your designated lane, the lane-following assist system gently steers the vehicle back to the center of the lane.

Lane-Keeping Assist

If you make a lane change without turning your signal on, the lane-keeping assist system will send an audio and visual alert to let you know your vehicle isn’t staying in its lane. If you don’t respond in a timely manner, the system will apply corrective steering.

Driver Attention Warning

The driver attention warning system monitors your behaviors to detect drowsy or inattentive driving. If it detects erratic or unusual patterns, such as drifting, speed differences, or other potentially dangerous movements, the system will send you a sound alert together with a warning message on the instrument display.

High Beam Assist

When driving at night or in murky conditions, you often need your headlight’s high beam setting for enhanced clarity. However, you need to dim the high beams when another car approaches so as not to compromise the other driver’s visibility. This process can be tedious. High beam assist automatically adjusts the headlights from high to low when it detects an approaching vehicle. Once the vehicle has passed, the system automatically toggles the headlights back to a high beam as needed.

Is Having Hyundai SmartSense Useful?

Absolutely, having Hyundai SmartSense is useful. Having this advanced technology in your vehicle is like having another set of eyes monitoring the road and other drivers. If you have a teenager or first-time driver, you’ll have extra peace of mind knowing they’ll have these innovative systems keeping them safe.

Even if your Hyundai only comes with basic SmartSense technology, your chances of avoiding a traffic or pedestrian collision increase. Many Hyundai vehicles can also come with extra optional safety features worth adding. Consult with us at Dublin Hyundai to see which additional safety features are best suited for your lifestyle and driving needs.

Hyundai SmartSense Versus Toyota Safety Sense

While Hyundai has one of the best safety records for U.S.-based vehicles, Toyota has excellent safety records for a Japanese-based automaker. Toyota also equips many of its newer vehicles with its driver-assistance technology suite, Toyota Safety Sense. While both systems help drivers stay safe on the road, Hyundai SmartSense outweighs Toyota Safety Sense by adding standard features such as blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot view monitor, and driver attention warning.

These features come standard across the Hyundai lineup, while they’re only optional for select trims and models of Toyota vehicles. Toyota Safety Sense includes standard features such as a lane mitigation system, automatic high beams, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection on most models. Most automakers equip some type of safety system in their vehicles, but some come with minimal standard features. Hyundai takes safety seriously and equips all of its models with Hyundai SmartSense.
