Hyundai completely redesigned the 2023 Tucson, giving it a clean, modern exterior that turns heads along the boulevard. Under the hood, Hyundai upgraded to a more powerful engine, and the available HTRAC all-wheel-drive system gives drivers the confidence to leave the pavement behind. In addition, this upgraded capability gives you more towing capacity, allowing you to take your toys along on your next adventure. Let’s explore the possibilities.

2023 Hyundai Tucson Towing Capacity

You have two options when it comes to towing trailers with your Tucson. First, you can equip your SUV with the standard tow hitch, hook up a trailer weighing up to 1,650 pounds, and drive. However, to get the most out of your towing capacity, we recommend you add a trailer brake system. With trailer brakes, your Hyundai Tucson can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

2023 Hyundai Tucson Powertrain

The Tucson has five gas-powered models, three hybrid powertrain versions, and two plug-in hybrid variants. Every Tucson gas model comes with a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and 16 valves with gasoline direct injection and multi-port fuel injection technology. This engine also features idle stop-and-go technology, improving efficiency by shutting the engine off when idling. When it’s time to go, a simple tap on the accelerator gets the engine started.

Hyundai mated this engine with its eight-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission. The SHIFTRONIC offers shift-by-wire technology for smooth shifting and power on demand. You get selectable drive modes that tune your throttle, steering, and suspension to match your mood and driving conditions.

This powertrain produces 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. You also get excellent fuel efficiency with an EPA-estimated 25 mpg driving on city streets, 32 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined.

Hybrid Tucson models come with a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine with dual overhead cams and 16 valves with gasoline direct injection technology. In addition, you have a 44.2-kW electric motor that produces 59 horsepower. Hyundai paired them with a six-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission. As a result, this hybrid powertrain makes 226 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

While the hybrid powertrain doesn’t add towing capacity to the Tucson, it delivers thrilling driving dynamics and gets up to 38 mpg. In addition, every hybrid Tucson comes standard with HTRAC AWD.

Tucson’s plug-in hybrid uses the same 1.6-liter engine and six-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission. However, Hyundai put in a larger 66.9-kW electric motor capable of producing 90 horsepower. As a result, the system generates 261 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

With PHEVs, you have the option to drive in all-electric mode. For example, the Tucson PHEV can travel up to 33 miles using only electricity to propel the vehicle. In addition, you get an EPA-estimated 80 mpge rating.

2023 Hyundai Tucson Drivetrain

Hyundai uses an advanced drivetrain to help achieve its impressive towing numbers. All five Tucson models come standard with a powerful front-wheel-drive system. In addition, you can add the HTRAC AWD system on every trim to gain improved traction and control on soft and slippery surfaces.

Hyundai installed an independent MacPherson strut with coil springs suspension system on the front. For the rear, the company uses an independent multi-link design suspension. In addition, you have gas-pressurized shock absorbers on all four corners.
